Now that you've chosen the Santa Barbara Courthouse as your wedding venue, it's time to start planning your big day. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process:

1. OBTAIN YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE

Before you can exchange vows at the courthouse, you'll need to obtain a marriage license from the Santa Barbara County Clerk's Office. Both you and your partner will need to appear in person and present valid identification. Be sure to check the office's operating hours and any specific requirements beforehand.

2. CHOOSE YOUR CEREMONY LOCATION

The Santa Barbara Courthouse offers several picturesque locations for wedding ceremonies, including the Mural Room, the Sunken Gardens, and the Courthouse Clock Tower. Consider the size of your guest list and your personal preferences when selecting the perfect spot for your ceremony.

For Civil Marriage Ceremonies Performed by the County Clerk-Recorder's Office:

  • Appointments are available during normal business hours Monday through Friday only, excluding holidays. Appointments may be booked up to 90 days in advance. There is a non-refundable fee of $23.

  • The guest limit is eight (8) people including children and photographers. (10 people total, including the couple).

  • Ceremony held at β€œClerk Recorder Assessor Area”

For Marriage Ceremonies with a Guest Count over 10:

  • The fee to reserve the Exterior Gardens is $1,200 ($1,000 facility fee plus $200 non-refundable application fee.)

  • The fee to reserve the Mural Room is $700 ($200 non-refundable application fee, $500 facility fee). 2-hour time slot. Seating capacity is 100.

  • For small wedding ceremonies with 15 or fewer participants, there are six locations outside of the reserved spaces, free of charge, primarily along the Anacapa and Figueroa Street lawn areas. These locations (A through H) are non-reservable. These locations will provide a place for small wedding parties with the architectural treasure of the Courthouse buildings and landscaping as a backdrop.

3. RESERVE YOUR DATE AND TIME

Once you've chosen your ceremony location, contact the Santa Barbara Courthouse to reserve your preferred date and time. Keep in mind that popular dates may be booked quickly, so it's best to secure your reservation as early as possible. You can book your date as early in advance as 90 days.

4. CONSIDER ADDITIONAL SERVICES

Depending on your preferences, you may choose to enhance your courthouse wedding with additional services, such as hiring a florist, or officiant. Many couples also opt to host a small reception at a nearby restaurant or event venue following the ceremony.
